Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight (8) hours prior to the appointment.
  • No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.   Smoking has a serious negative effect on your lungs and wound healing.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, REMAIN IN THE OFFICE during the procedure, and drive the patient home. The patient should have a responsible adult remain with him or her the day of the procedure and the first night or be readily available.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery. Nail polish will interfere with anesthesia monitors and therefore must be removed from at least one finger for accurate readings.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, asthma flare, fever, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office as soon as possible before the surgery to discuss the situation and conditions to see if there is a need to reschedule the procedure.
  • If you take routine oral or injectable medications, please check with Dr. Catrambone or Dr. August prior to your surgical date for instructions on which ones to hold before surgery and which ones to continue to take prior to surgery.    This is most often reviewed with patients at the preoperative consultation appointment.  As a rule of thumb, you should take heart and blood pressure medications with sip of water and you should not discontinue any prescription blood thinner unless approved by the prescriber.   Heart medications, blood thinners, immunosuppressant and diabetic medications must be discussed with your oral surgeon before the day of surgery.
  • TRY TO RELAX    We will take good care of you.
